Talking about his ten year career in tech and the attractions of Glasgow as a place to live and work are the main topics of this blog by Giovanni Guarino from Spider Online.

In 2008 I graduated from the University of Strathclyde with first-class honours (BSC) in Technology and Business Studies. Ten years on and I've worked my way up the career ladder to hold my current position as an Account Director for Spider Online, a multi-award winning digital agency based in Glasgow.

On weekdays I'm at my desk by 8.30am preparing for the challenges ahead. The days begin with team meetings with our tech developers where they report on the progress of our current client projects across the UK. These can range anywhere from e-commerce websites to mobile applications to online recruitment sites.

My job is to manage client relationships and ensure projects run smoothly. I'm what they call a 'people person' but it's essential I also have a good understanding of the latest technologies and wider business landscape, for example, the impact GDPR will have for our clients.

Communication is often in the form of WebEx or Skype, we live in a digital world after all, but with so many great restaurants and coffee shops on our doorstep, I never need an excuse to catch up with clients over a coffee or lunch.

Technology is an ever evolving space and it's fascinating to see the impact it has on our daily lives. From paying for products via a mobile app or Apple watch, to how large financial sector clients attract graduate talent through well designed recruitment websites and applicant tracking systems, the fast pace of change makes tech an exciting space to work in.

I'm fortunate that attending industry seminars, conferences and networking events is part of my role so I'm continually learning and talking about technology, a topic I'm very passionate about.

Many of my university and school friends still live and work in Glasgow, so outside of the office I enjoy weekly games of five-a-side football and always like to take advantage of Glasgow's brilliant nightlife, socialising with friends and family at the weekends.
