Glasgow Young Professionals

The team from Glasgow Young Professionals talks about how this networking group started eight years ago in Glasgow and how it has developed to its current membership of 2,500

Networking is a word which strikes fear into the heart of many. "Working a room" - like speaking in public - is more terrifying than death, depending on which studies you read.

When serial entrepreneur Sara Robertson moved to Glasgow at the beginning of 2010, she was determined to create an environment for young people to build friendships, professional networks and skills. She has certainly done that and 8 years on, her legacy is intact.

The Glasgow Young Professionals (GYP) team are firm believers in collaboration, innovation and supporting local businesses. Each month members catch up on the last Thursday of the month in a different venue. Twice a year in April & October we collaborate with other groups (RICS Matrics & CIOB Novus) to organise a pub quiz - a very popular event with over 100 in the room each time battling for first prize.

Our biggest night of the year by far is the Burns Supper & Ceilidh, which has had well over 1,000 attendees since it started in 2013. The team came up with their own Burns Supper format to shake up the old traditions and continue celebrating the Bard's contribution to Scottish life.

As well as growing your professional network and making friends at GYP we also offer fantastic seminars for the large percentage of our members in professional services who have a certain number of CPD hours that they must fulfil.

GYP would be nothing without the regulars who turn up, and the enthusiastic team behind the scenes who organise the events. The set-up is simple within our team: if you have a passion that you want to share with our 2,500 members - go for it. From trips to Glasgow Film Theatre to Beauty Kitchen Workshops, we've covered it all. There is so much to do in our wonderful city, and if you would like to share an idea or passion with us we'd love to hear from you!

Most of all, we'd love to see you at future events. There's no membership fee and you can reserve your place via the  Glasgow Young Professionals website. Come along and see for yourself how friendly we are. If it's your first time at GYP, our team (pictured - left to right) Matt, Emma, Clare, Petya & Jill will make sure that you are not alone, introduce you to the regulars and ensure your experience of networking is a positive one.
