Glasgow Airport is
celebrating a record start to its 50th anniversary
year after welcoming 551,177 passengers through its doors in
January, representing an annual increase of 13.5%, making it the
airport's busiest January on record.
International traffic grew by 17.6% due to strong demand for
some of the airport's new services to European cities such as Milan
and Bucharest and Aer Lingus, which this year added capacity
to Dublin, also reported particularly strong demand.
Domestic traffic increased by 10.2% due to strong uptake on the
airport's London routes provided by British Airways, easyJet and
Ryanair. Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport,
said: "We anticipate 2016 will be our busiest year on record,
welcoming nine million passengers through our doors for the first
time.
"Our focus for 2016 is to ensure we continue to build on the
success of last year where we secured 30 new routes and saw
passenger numbers grow at unprecedented levels."
January's performance followed news that 2015 had been Glasgow
Airport's busiest since 2007. Annual passenger numbers were up by
13% to over 8.7 million. The airport was also confirmed as one of
the fastest growing airports in Europe by trade body ACI
Europe.
