Glasgow has been revealed as one of the most important areas for
the UK's insurance and long-term savings industry, outside
London.
New independent
analysis by Volterra, commissioned by the Association of
British Insurers (ABI), has shown for the first time the extent to
which the sector powers the economies of cities across the UK
through jobs and investment.
The insurance and long-term savings sector provides over 10,000
jobs in Glasgow, contributing over £1 billion to Glasgow's
economy.
Over the last decade, the sector has increased its skills base
through a pipeline of recruits available from local colleges and
universities. Another reason has been the established presence of
the Insurance and Actuarial Society of Glasgow
(IASG - the city branch of the Chartered Insurance Institute), the
professional body for insurance professionals.
Huw Evans, Director General of the ABI, says:"It's clear that
Glasgow is of enormous value to firms, offering the perfect mix of
location, infrastructure and talented workforce to help insurance
businesses thrive."
