Glasgow has performed exceptionally well in the annual 'European
Cities and Regions of the Future' awards run by fDi magazine.
In the overall rankings of 253 cities, Glasgow emerged as the
second top large European city, those with populations between
500,000 and one million, behind Edinburgh and ahead of Amsterdam,
Oslo, Helsinki, Frankfurt and Birmingham.
London was top in the category for Major European Cities, with
populations above one million.
Glasgow also scored highly in several other categories for Large
European cities.
The city came 3rd for its foreign direct investment
strategy, 5th for business friendliness and
7th for Human Resources.
The winning cities are selected by a specialist judging panel
which evaluates data collected on economic potential, human
resources, cost effectiveness, quality of life, infrastructure,
business friendliness and FDI promotion strategy.
Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader, Glasgow City Council said,
"It is always a pleasure to see that Glasgow's continuing success
has been recognised. This success has reached new heights over the
past decade with the development of the International Financial
Services District, and is testament to the hard work of the council
and all our partners over that time, attracting over than 15,000
new jobs and over one billion pounds of investment."
