01 Sep 2010

The Spanish bank, Santander is creating 120 new jobs at its customer services centre at St. Vincent Street, in the IFSD. The new jobs are part of a recently announced expansion which sees a total of 400 new posts created at Santander's customer service centres in Glasgow, Liverpool and Leicester.

The company confirmed this latest expansion comes after three years of continued, sustainable growth in its UK market share.  Now one of Britain's biggest retail banks with 25 million customers, Santander also confirmed the new jobs would be filled by March 2011.

Welcoming the news on behalf of the IFSD partnership, Jim Watson, Scottish Enterprise said, "This is clearly great news for Glasgow and, following recent new job announcements from Barclays, Odyssey and esure, is a very encouraging sign for the city's financial services sector."

Santander first became a major force in UK retail banking when it acquired Abbey in 2004. Subsequently, it bought Alliance & Leicester and Bradford & Bingley and now employs over 21,000 people in a UK network of 1300 branches. In a move that underlines its growth ambitions in the UK, Santander has also recently sealed a deal to acquire over 300 retail branches from RBS.
