Spotlight On

Spotlight on… Jim Rennie, ACII Chartered Insurer and Branch Manager of LV= Broker.

IFSDG: How long have you worked at LV= Broker?

Jim Rennie: I joined LV in November 2008 with the aim of establishing a Scottish operation in support of the existing UK business. LV is a long established financial services company (over 150 years) but the LV= Broker business is a relatively new venture for our parent.

IFSDG: How many people work at LV= Broker?

Jim Rennie: The group employs over 3500 people in the UK, but only 7 happy souls fly the flag for us In Glasgow.

IFSDG: What is your vision for LV= Broker in Glasgow?

Jim Rennie: My part of the business offers general insurance solutions to the Scottish SME sector and this is delivered via Scottish based insurance brokers. Despite being relatively ‘new boys on the block’, we have the added advantage of being part of a very long established, financially strong and respected mutual.

My vision is to continue to deliver first rate service to our Scottish customers and as a consequence continue to grow our business.

IFSDG: What's a typical day for you?

Jim Rennie: Really depends if I am out visiting customers or office based on that particular day. My office days will not be radically different to the majority of others so I won’t bore you with the detail.

IFSDG: How many emails do you receive on an average day?

Jim Rennie: Thankfully as a business we have avoided the e-mail (and copy everyone in) culture. Typically 25-35 e-mails daily.

IFSDG: Why did LV= Broker choose to locate in the IFSD in Glasgow?

Jim Rennie: The Scottish general insurance business (for insurers) is primarily based in Glasgow, so in effect the IFSD chose us. Availability of skilled people was key and Glasgow was the only city that could deliver on this for us.

IFSDG: Three good things about working in Glasgow?

Jim Rennie:

The people.
Ease of access.
The distance from my house. Too far for my wife and teenage daughters to travel to enjoy the fantastic shopping experience!

IFSDG: What is your biggest business achievement to date?

Jim Rennie: Surviving for over 30 years in the financial services sector and still being paid for doing something I enjoy.

IFSDG: What is the best investment you ever made?

Jim Rennie: My children – hopefully!

IFSDG: Which business person or company do you most admire and why?

Jim Rennie: The late Dame Anita Roddick. A person who proved that you can build a business that was both successful and ethical.

IFSDG: What did you want to be when you were a child?

Jim Rennie: Too long ago to remember but probably rich. Failed on that one!

IFSDG: What do you do to relax away from the office?

Jim Rennie: Too decrepit to run anymore but found the delights of cycling. Hopefully outdoors, but if not then my static bike in the garage suffices.

IFSDG: Blackberry or I-Phone?

Jim Rennie: Blackberry

IFSDG: Suit or no suit?

Jim Rennie: Suit but only when working

IFSDG: Football or rugby?

Jim Rennie: No allegiance either way, but I love the atmosphere at a big rugby game.

IFSDG: Wine or beer?

Jim Rennie: Definitely wine

IFSDG: Sunshine or snow?

Jim Rennie: Need you ask (I’m Scottish and it’s January)?

IFSDG: and finally, what three words to sum you up

Jim Rennie: Honest (hopefully) / Loyal / Approachable
