It's been an especially eventful month for the University of Glasgow which has
formally taken possession of the former Western Infirmary site: a
significant milestone which enables the proposed £1 billion
investment in its Gilmorehill campus.
The masterplan for the 14 acres site includes:
- Creation of a Research and Innovation Hub including incubator
space for spin-out collaborations with industry,
- Public routes and a new central square linking Byres Road to
the up-and-coming cultural quarter for the West End, with new links
to Kelvingrove and the newly-refurbished Kelvin Hall.
- New buildings for the College of Art, Social Sciences, the
Institute of Health and Wellbeing, and the College of Science and
Engineering;
- A hotel, restaurant, bars and cafes, ensuring the five
listed buildings on site have a new, valuable use.
It's anticipated that the 10 year project will create 2,500 jobs
during the construction period.
Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the
University of Glasgow, said, "We hope to use the new site as a
catalyst to attract and grow the very best academics, to attract
the very best students and to ensure that Glasgow continues to be
one of the top universities in the world".
